David Toms recovering after surgery

David Toms is recuperating after undergoing a procedure Thursday afternoon at the Mayo Clinic to attempt to cure him of a heart ailment resulting from a rapid heartbeat.

The ablation procedure took about five hours, and his recovery isn't expected to take long.

"The doctors feel he should be cured,'' said Toms' official spokesman Adam Young.

Toms, 38, has been dealing with a rapid heartbeat for some time, but sought treatment after he suffered an episode at a PGA Tour event in September. Severe lightheadedness caused him to be airlifted to a hospital during the first round of the 84 Lumber Classic.

Doctors used a catheter, inserted through a small incision in Toms' groin, to find the problem area. Using radiofrequency ablation, they tried to correct damaged nerves in the heart that are misfiring.

The former LSU star has won 11 times on the PGA Tour, including the 2001 PGA Championship. He earned $3.96 million this season and has amassed $22.9 million in PGA Tour earnings throughout his 16-year career.
