AsianTour to play Tsunami benefit

Stars of golf's Asian Tour will play a charity tournament later this month to raise money for victims of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated much of the region, tour organizers said Tuesday.

The Tsunami Relief Fund Pro-Am will be played on Jan. 31 at Singapore's Sentosa Golf Club with each team competing contributing a minimum of S$5,000 (US$3,000; euro2,300).

"Many of our Asian Tour members feel that the charity Pro-Am is the best way to contribute toward the victims of this catastrophe and all proceeds will go toward the tsunami relief efforts of the Red Cross,'' Asian Tour Chief Executive Louis Martin was quoted as saying in a statement.

The tournament will match one Asian Tour professional with three amateurs. Pros will also hold golf clinics.

"Several of our sponsors and friends of the Asian Tour have already pledged their support toward this event and we hope that corporate Singapore will also provide their backing in this charity drive,'' Martin said.

The Asian Tour comes to Singapore later this month for the Caltex Masters, won last year by seven-time European Order of Merit winner Colin Montgomerie of Scotland.
