Top Australians commit to Australian Open

Eight-times PGA Tour winner Stuart Appleby and defending champion Robert Allenby have been added to the line-up for next month's Australian Open at the Royal Sydney Golf Club, organisers said on Monday.

Appleby and Allenby join fellow Australians Adam Scott, Aaron Baddeley, Greg Norman and U.S. Open champion Geoff Ogilvy in what executive chairman Paul McNamee described as the finest array of home talent ever assembled Down Under.

"The facts speak for themselves and our golfers are among the best in the world," McNamee, the former director of the Australian Open tennis tournament, told reporters at the event launch on Monday.

"With Stuart and Robert on board we have secured a real challenge for the Stonehaven Cup.

"Stuart Appleby has one, Aaron Baddeley and Robert Allenby both have two, Greg Norman has five while Adam Scott and Geoff Ogilvy really want one. It is the jewel in the crown of Australian golf."

Allenby achieved a unique treble in 2005 when he won Australia's three leading events - the Open, PGA Championship and Masters -- within the space of three weeks.

McNamee also announced the prize pool for the event from Nov. 16-19 had increased to US $1.1 million.
