Nick O'Hern and Peter Lonard will go into the final round of the Australian PGA Championship with a three-stroke lead after finishing Saturday's third round at 18-under-par at the Coolum course.
O'Hern fired a best-of-the-day nine-under 63, including nine birdies and no blemishes, while two-time champion and overnight leader Lonard carded a 65 as the field took advantage of benign conditions on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.
They led by three from another Australian, Peter O'Malley, who fired a 66, and by four from Wade Ormsby, who mixed five birdies, an eagle and a triple bogey eight at the 534-yard par five 15th in his round of 68. O'Hern carded five birdies in an imperious outward 31 before coming back in an equally flawless 32 to reach a 54-hole total of 198.
Lonard, who won the title outright in 2004 and shared it with Jarrod Moseley two years before, carded a second straight 65 inspired by four straight birdies from the 10th.
U.S. Open champion Geoff Ogilvy fired a five-under 67 to be eight shots off the pace, two ahead of Stuart Appleby, an eight-time winner on the US PGA Tour.
Robert Allenby kissed goodbye to a successful title defense after a level-par 72 left him 11 shots off the pace, one further adrift than world number four Adam Scott, who fired a 71.
