Jay Haas & Loren Roberts battle for Senior titles

It has come down to a one tournament showdown for Jay Haas and Loren Roberts.

The only two players with a chance to win the Charles Schwab Cup, Haas and Roberts headline the field at the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship starting Thursday at Sonoma Golf Club.

Haas enters the event with a 126-point lead over Roberts in the Cup standings and a $107,832 advantage on the money list. Both players have won a major among their four titles, with Haas capturing the Senior PGA Championship and Roberts the Senior British Open.

There are 880 points up for grabs this week but Haas and Roberts have separated themselves from the pack by so much that they are the only two players with a chance to win the Schwab Cup title.

Haas leads the standings with 2,843 points with Roberts in second at 2,717. Brad Bryant is a distant third with 1,685 points.

Tom Watson may not have a chance to win the $1 million annuity that goes to the overall Cup winner but he should be considered one of the favorites to win the event this week.

Last year, Watson drained a 20-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to finish his comeback from a six-stroke deficit and win the event for the third time. With the win, Watson overtook Dana Quigley to win the Charles Schwab Cup for the second time.

Another two-time winner of the Cup, Hale Irwin is in the field and looking for his first win of the season. Irwin's last win came at the SAS Championship last season and his winless streak is up to 24 events.

A 44-time winner on the senior circuit, Irwin had won at least twice in every season since turning 50 in 1995.
