Nick Faldo and R&A launch the Faldo Series Asia

Nick Faldo today launched the Faldo Series Asia, his initiative to bring opportunities to young people in Asia through golf.

Nick announced that Mission Hills Golf Club in China and The R&A will be the major partners of the new Faldo Series Asia which will help identify and nurture the region’s next generation of champions. Mission Hills, China will also become the home of the Faldo Series Asia for the next three years.

Sanctioned by the Asia Pacific Golf Confederation (APGC), the Faldo Series Asia schedule for 2006 features the Faldo Series International Trophy at Hong Kong Golf Club (16-20 January) and is followed by new Faldo Series national championships in China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Singapore and United Arab Emirates as well as the inaugural Faldo Series Asia grand final to be held at Mission Hills.

At each Faldo Series national championship, talented young male and female golfers, aged between 11 and 21 years old, will experience top-level competition together with expert advice on golf-related topics. Younger children from the local community will also experience golf, as spectators and participants, many for the first time.

The leading players from Faldo Series national championships will qualify for the Faldo Series Asia grand final at Mission Hills, the world’s largest golf complex, together with invitees from other Asian countries.

As well as the annual grand final on the Faldo course at Mission Hills, the resort will also hold the Faldo Series national championship in China plus an annual fund-raising event in aid of The Faldo Trust (Asia).

Nick Faldo is currently in Asia to host the 2nd Faldo Series International Trophy in Hong Kong. Speaking at Mission Hills, he said: “I am extremely excited about the Faldo Series Asia and one hundred per cent committed to helping golf development in the region. I am extremely grateful to Mission Hills and The R&A, both of whom share my desire to give something back to the game and have allowed my vision in Asia to become a reality. With the added support of the APGC and the national golf associations I sincerely hope to create chances for younger people to get into golf and opportunities for talented players to achieve their ambitions.”

Dr. David Chu, JP, Chairman of Mission Hills Group, said: “There are over 400 million young people in China alone. At Mission Hills, we are strong believers that junior golf initiatives can provide a great benefit to a large number of them. Thanks to the efforts of such an exceptional golfer as Nick Faldo and the assistance of organisations such as the R&A and the APGC, the Faldo Series Asia can provide such benefits to the vast pool of golfers that we have available in Asia. As such, Mission Hills is very proud to be the Home of the Faldo Series Asia. The course that Nick designed at Mission Hills has become one of the most popular courses in Asia since it opened and I am convinced that it will prove to be the perfect cradle in which to nurture the skills of the next generation of Asia’s junior golfers as we play host to the Faldo Series Asia grand final on an annual basis”.

Duncan Weir, Director of Golf Development of The R&A, added: “The R&A is delighted to continue its longstanding support of the Faldo Series and especially at a time when it is rapidly expanding its activities in the Asia-Pacific region. Our ability to offer funding is due entirely to the annual financial surplus generated by our Open Championship which, of course, Nick Faldo has won on three occasions. We have not yet had an Asian winner of The Open but initiatives like this will surely enhance the prospect of this changing in the near future. For this and many other reasons, the Faldo Series Asia has our wholehearted support."

Tommy Lee, Chairman of the APGC Executive Committee, concluded: “The APGC is very excited to be involved with the Faldo Series Asia and The R&A in the development of golf in Asia. With such a famous person as Nick Faldo leading and inspiring it, I hope that many young people will be attracted to the game of golf and be inspired to become the champions of the future.”
