John Daly and Jose Maria Olazabal on Hall of Fame ballot

A pair of two-time major winners, Jose Maria Olazabal of Spain and John Daly of the United States, will make their first appearance on the ballots for the World Golf Hall of Fame, Hall of Fame officials have announced.

Both will turn 40 year old in 2006, the final qualification for them to be nominated for consideration.

Olazabal, who won the Masters twice among his 29 worldwide victories, leads the 2006 International ballot, which the World Golf Hall of Fame oversees. Daly, who won the 1991 PGA Championship and 1995 British Open among his nine worldwide victories, appears on the PGA Tour ballot. Both ballots are being distributed this week to their respective voting bodies.

The class of 2006 will be determined spring, and the induction ceremony is set for Monday, Oct. 30, 2006. Vijay Singh, who was elected in 2005 but deferred his induction, will be inducted as part of the Class of 2006.

Starting this year, the World Golf Hall of Fame has changed two aspects of the balloting. For starters, the ballot lifespan has been increased to 15 years from 10 years, meaning that current candidates will remain eligible through at least 2010. Also, after a candidate has been on either ballot for 10 years, he or she automatically will be moved to the Veteran’s category.

Several players came close to election last year. Among them are Larry Nelson (55%), Curtis Strange (50%), Henry Picard (49%) and Jumbo Ozaki (48%).
