Sanchez and Monke lead on day one in Hungary

Spain's Ana Belen Sanchez and Germany's Anja Monke carded a pair of seven-under-par 64s on a scorching day at Old Lake Golf Club in Tata to tie for the lead after the first round of the €165,000 OTP Bank Ladies Central European Open in Hungary.

After a day of low scoring at the tight tree lined course, which is an hour from Budapest , Spain 's Sara Beautell lay one shot adrift on six-under-par after a 65.

The English trio of Trish Johnson, Rebecca Hudson and Suzann Dickens were just two shots off the pace alongside Spain's Marta Prieto, French woman Nathalie David Mila and Ellen Smets from Belgium, who all fired five-under-par 66s.

Sanchez, a member of the victorious European Solheim Cup Team in 2003 and a winner on the Ladies European Tour in 2004, had a perfect round including seven birdies with four in a row from the second hole.

The 2004 Ladies Italian Open Champion admitted: “ Today was an easy day. I played to every green, I just missed one and it was on the fringe. It was very solid and the birdies just came along.”

Monke, the runner-up at the recent KLM Ladies Open, had eight birdies and just one bogey. She credited her low score to the defensive approach that she took and she said:

“ Yesterday, after the pro-am I was really struggling with my driver, so I spent a lot of time on the range, and I decided to play the course a little more defensively. I decided not to take a driver on every hole so I could avoid the water on the right side, because my tendency was nice, high and right!

“I actually got around quite nicely using that defensive strategy on this golf course. I also made some awesome putts. I mean; they went in from all over the place. So that was nice, I enjoyed it.”

Sara Beautell, who lay in third position, carded the lowest round in a six-year career with the Ladies European Tour and she said: “I played pretty good. I had an eagle on number three where I played a nine-iron in and I had seven birdies, one double bogey and one bogey. I putted really well and made some great approach shots. I'm very happy because I finally had a good round. It's my first good one of the year!”

Beautell is no stranger to playing in hot conditions and she added: “I like playing in the heat. The golf course is in great condition. Tomorrow we'll see what happens. It would be nice to be up there and in with a chance in the final round. It's been a long time.”
