Westwood & Edfors commit to Royal Trophy

Lee Westwood and Johan Edfors will represent Europe at the Royal Trophy next year against an Asian team which has named India's Jeev Milkha Singh as its eighth and final player, organisers said on Wednesday.

Singh, India's highest ranked golfer, will complete Naomichi "Joe" Ozaki team for the match play event in Bangkok, while Westwood makes his Royal Trophy debut on the back of record-breaking performances in the last two Ryder Cups.

Westwood scored eight-and-a-half points in his last 10 Ryder Cup matches to help Europe achieve record triumphs over the United States at both the Oakland Hills and the K Club events.

The Briton said he was looking forward to a tough contest following Europe's slender 9-7 victory against Asia in the inaugural event back in January.

"I've spoken to a number of players including Paul McGinley and they told me the first Royal Trophy was very fiercely contested," he said in a statement.

"Paul is paying a return visit, and my old pal Darren Clarke is also in the Team. Darren and I managed to win both of our matches at the K Club and have teamed up on many occasions, so it will be reassuring to have familiar faces out there."

Edfors also makes his debut, joining Westwood, fellow Swedes Henrik Stenson and Robert Karlsson, and Irish pair Darren Clarke and Paul McGinley on Seve Ballesteros's team.

Osaki's team includes Japanese pair Toru Taniguchi and Tetsuji Hiratsuka, South Koreans Yang Yong-eun and SK Ho, and Thai trio Thaworn Wiratchant, Prom Meesawat and Thongchai Jaidee.

The contest takes place over three days at the Amata Spings Country Club from Jan. 12-14. Thailand will host the event until 2010, after which the hosts will alternate between Europe and Asia.
