Seve Ballesteros plans decent Open performance

Seve Ballesteros has not lost his optimism despite another long absence from the European Tour's fairways.

In October the five times major champion and six times European number one made a comeback at the Madrid Open after nearly two years away.

Admitting to being unprepared for this return, Ballesteros missed the cut in Madrid before insisting he would play 10 to 12 events this year.

Lack of practice delayed the start to his season until this week when he plays in the centenary French Open, an event he has won four times, ahead of his first British Open appearance for five years.

"My expectations are that I will like to play now and then and compete now and then," said Ballesteros on Wednesday.

"Hopefully I can get progressively better and better and hopefully compete in a decent way in the (British) Open.

"But if that is not the case, it won't be the end of the world.

"I have three great children, I'm healthy, I have my course designing and I have my exhibitions. Life is good."

Now 49 and looking to play Champions Tour rather than European Seniors Tour when he reaches 50, Ballesteros said: "People have short memories and they forget what I have done. In Europe I don't have the respect any more."
