Betsy King named 2007 Solheim Cup Captain

Betsy King, a six-times major winner, was announced on Thursday as United States captain for the 2007 Solheim Cup in Sweden.

King, who played in the first five Cup matches against Europe, takes over from Nancy Lopez who led the Americans to a record sixth victory in last year's encounter at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana.

Beth Daniel, who at 48 became the oldest player in Solheim history last year, has been appointed assistant captain to King.

"I am very honoured to be named captain of the U.S. Solheim Cup team," the 34-year-old King said in an LPGA statement. "I look forward to the preparation and competition over the next two years.

"When I called Beth, I told her that I consider her a co-captain rather than an assistant captain. Beth has a lot of Solheim Cup experience and will bring a lot to the team."

The Solheim Cup will be played for at Halmstad Golf Club from Sept. 14-16 next year.

Europe, who will be led by Sweden's Helen Alfredsson, won the biennial competition the last time it was played on Swedish soil when they romped to victory by 17-1/2 points to 10-1/2 at Barseback Golf and Country Club in 2003.

The Americans lead 6-3 in the series, which is the women's equivalent of the men's Ryder Cup where the top players from the United States face those of Europe.
