Tiger Woods confirms US Open entry

Tiger Woods, who has not played tournament golf since the U.S. Masters eight weeks ago, confirmed on Wednesday he would return to action at next month's U.S. Open.

"I've been practising my butt off to get ready," the world number one said on his official website. "It's time to go back to work."

Since tying for third at the Masters on April 9, Woods has been grieving for his father Earl, who died on May 3 after a long battle with cancer.

A lifelong mentor, adviser and friend to his son, Earl introduced Tiger to golf as a young child. Tiger has often attributed his mental toughness in tournaments to his former Green Beret father.

Before his father's death, Woods repeatedly said he was unlikely to resume playing until the June 15-18 U.S. Open at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York.

He pulled out of the Byron Nelson Championship earlier this month and also this week's Memorial tournament, two events he usually plays.

There was even speculation Woods might skip the second major of the year, but that looked unlikely when the 10-times major winner played a practice round at Winged Foot on Saturday.
