Seve gets Golfer of the Month award

London - Seve Ballesteros has been named the Johnnie Walker Golfer of the Month for September for the way he captained the European team to victory at Valderrama.

Ballesteros was given the award on behalf of the team, all 12 of whom contributed at least one point to the 14½-13½ triumph.

He receives a cut-glass golf ball decanter from crown jewellers Garrard and earns £1,000 for both the tour's benevolent trust and the Golf Foundation.

Leading challengers for the award were Costantino Rocca, who in addition to winning three points out of four against the Americans (including a singles win over Tiger Woods) won the European Masters in Switzerland with a closing 62, and New Zealander Greg Turner, winner of the One 2 One British Masters at the Forest of Arden.
