Martin and
Ballesteros shake hands
Valderrama,
Spain, 24th September -
To everyone's relief Miguel Angel Martin appeared at Valderrama today
prepared to settle his differences with Seve Ballesteros, Europe's
Ryder Cup team captian. They both shook hands and Martin will now
join the squad as a non-playing member.
Martin, who
was the 10th and last automatic qualifier for the matches, was axed
from the team when after two months out of the game with a wrist
injury, he refused to take a fitness test. With fine disregard for
the necessities of team membership he declared he needed until this
Friday, the day matches begin.
He was disabused
of that idea by the Ryder Cup Committee with some would think unseemly
haste in throwing him off the team. Martin promptly said he would
sue.
It's over and
I'm happy," said Martin, who added that his injured wrist still
was not ready for competition. "I'm here for the week and I'm
even staying in the room next to Seve."
He refused
to say anything about the Ryder Cup Committee's offer of financial
compensation but it is expected a press conference will be held
tomorrow.
"Martin
is morally re-established on the team," said Pedro Cordelus,
vice president of the Spanish Golf Federation. "He is looking
toward the future and not at the past."
Martin will
now wear a uniform and accompany the team at all functions.
