European Tour gives Montgomerie honorary life membership

London - Colin Montgomerie has been given honorary life membership of the European Tour in recognition of his unprecedented five successive Order of Merit titles.

"I am thrilled to be given this accolade, especially as it comes from my peers," the Scot said.

Montgomerie has never taken a backward step in the Order of Merit since turning professional 10 years ago and has been No 1 since 1993.

To keep that position he has been 635 under par for his last 102 tournaments, winning 12 of them and finishing in the top 10 an incredible 55 times. His stroke average in that period is 69.94.
