Metal
spikes are banned at Pinehurst
Pinehurst,
North Carolina - Pinehurst Resort and Country Club have
banned metal spikes from its eight golf courses effective January
1, 1998. It is claimed to be the first US golf resort to discontinue
the use of metal spikes.
Resort officials
said the use of non-metal spikes will make for smoother greens and
also improve their overall health. Officials also stated that non-metal
spikes are easier on cart paths, steps, sidewalks, and carpets in
the clubhouse and dining areas.
Pinehurst's
No. 2 course will host the 1999 U.S. Open.
