US take commanding
lead after Saturday morning foursomes
Scarsdale,
N.Y. 9th August - A poor start by Great Britain & Ireland
early pairings deteriated still further with some slack golf that
gave the US team the upper-hand after the first round of foursome
matches.
The first tee
shot of the day for Steven Young of G.B.&I. was hooked badly
and this was followed by the second pairing when Juston Rose, the
17 year-old, hit his ball out-of-bounds.
Steven Young
and Barclay Howard then went on to be beaten by Brad Elder and Joel
Kribel by 4 and 3 while Michael Brooks and Justin Rose were never
in contention against Jerry Courville Jnr and Buddy Marucci and
lost by 5 and 4.
The pairing
of Gary Wolstenhome with Keith Nolan faired even worse against Jason
Gore and John Harris in a match that finished 6 and 4 in fvaour
of the US team.
The only pairing
to put up some resistance was that of Richard Coughlan and David
Park but lost to Randy Lean and Chris Wollmann by 1-hole when Coughlan
failed to hole a five-foot put on the 18th to square their match.
The matches
started this morning at 8.00am EDT and are followed this afternoon
with eight singles matches. All are match-play and worth one point.
