US go 5 points
ahead and take a dominant position
Scarsdale,
N. Y. 9th August - The US team have taken a dominate position
in the Walker Cup with 4½ points in the singles to add to their
4 points from the morning foursomes matches. The team now need only
4 points from the Sunday matches to win the back the trophy they
lost at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club, Wales in 1995.
The afternoon
started better for the Great Britain & Ireland team and there
was hope that some of the damage would be recovered. however after
winning the first two matches they lost three out of the last four
and are now left with a difficult task trailing by 5 points.
US team captain,
Dowing Gray said, "It was a good day for us. It looked like
it was slipping away a little in the afternoon but I'm proud of
the way we hung in there."
Clive Brown
the G.B & I captain said, " It's just not good enough.
But hopefully our play in the singles will carry over to tomorrow."
Justin Rose
, the 17 year-old from England and the youngest player ever to take
part in the Walker Cup notched up his first point when he defeated
Joel Kribel 1-up.
