England's amateurs lose to France

Les Bordes, France - England lost 12 and a half to 11 and a half to France in an amateur international at Les Bordes.

It was the second successive French victory in the series following their 15-9 win at Sunningdale two years ago.

England, trailing 8-4 overnight, were 10-6 behind going into the final round of singles matches but nearly turned the match round.

In the foursomes Bath's Colin Edwards and Graeme Storm overcame Oliver David and Anthony Grenier at the last hole, a feat matched by the Walker Cup pairing of Justine Rose and Gary Wolstenholme in their battle with Gregory Havret and Jean-Marc De Polo.

Rose and Wolstenholme both produced winning displays at the top of the singles order and Phil Rowe and new caps Simon Dyson and Ben Mason also emerged winners in their singles while Edwards halved with Montesi

Storm had his unbeaten record taken by De Polo and English champion Aran Wainwright went out to Jacques Thalamy as France just managed to hold out for victory.
