Golf moves
down the social ladder, but spending hits £1 million a day
London
- Golf has now officially moved into the working classes according
to Mintel, the market research company. Golfers tagged as lower
middle classes by market researchers can be found more on the fairways
of Britain on Saturday mornings than those higher up the social
bracket.
The Mintel
report, released today in London shows the AB category are now less
likely to play golf than the C2s. Even so golf still has a silver
lining with the sport now worth more money than ever before. According
to figures in the report enthusiasts are currently spending £1 million
a day on bags, designer clothing and clubs.
Figures published
by Mintel found that the proportion of AB men who are regular golfers
has dropped from 19 per cent in 1992 to 16 per cent this year. Less
exclusive groups are teeing off in greater numbers than ever before.
