Martin given exemption for the Open

St. Andrews, Scotland - Miguel Angel Martin has been granted an exemption to play in this year's Open Championship 16th - 19th July at Royal Birkdale, the R&A announced thisweek.

Martin would have been exempt as a member of the 1997 European Ryder Cup team, but he was removed from the team because of an injury. Martin is not exempt under any other category at this time.

Martin protested the decision to remove him, but eventually settled his differences with Ryder Cup captain Seve Ballesteros.
