Open Championship goes to Muirfield in 2002

St Andrews, Scotland - The 2002 Open Championship will be played at Muirfield for the first time for 10 years, the Royal and Ancient Club announced on Wednesday.

It will be the 15th time the championship will be held at the home of the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers.

On the last two occasions the Open was played there, in 1987 and 1992, the winner was Nick Faldo.

The previous four winners of the Open there were Americans Tom Watson in 1980, Lee Trevino in 1972 and Jack Nicklaus in 1966 and South African Gary Player in 1959.

This year's Open will be held at Royal Birkdale, Southport, England, from 16th - 19th July. The Old Course at St Andrews will stage the 2000 event and Royal Lytham the tournament in 2001.
