Open Championship
goes to Muirfield in 2002
St
Andrews, Scotland - The 2002 Open Championship will be
played at Muirfield for the first time for 10 years, the Royal and
Ancient Club announced on Wednesday.
It will be
the 15th time the championship will be held at the home of the Honourable
Company of Edinburgh Golfers.
On the last
two occasions the Open was played there, in 1987 and 1992, the winner
was Nick Faldo.
The previous
four winners of the Open there were Americans Tom Watson in
1980, Lee Trevino in 1972 and Jack Nicklaus in 1966 and South
African Gary Player in 1959.
This year's
Open will be held at Royal Birkdale, Southport, England, from 16th
- 19th July. The Old Course at St Andrews will stage the 2000 event
and Royal Lytham the tournament in 2001.
