USGA names
Curtis Cup captain
Far
Hills, N.J. - The United States Golf Association picked
two-time U.S. Women's Amateur champion Barbara McIntire as captain
of the 1998 U.S. Curtis Cup team.
The 63-year-old
Colorado resident, a member of six U.S. Curtis Cup teams, will lead
a team of eight amateurs against a team from Great Britain &
Ireland at the Minikahda Club in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
McIntire served
on the USGA Women's Committee from 1985 to 1996 and was its chairman
in 1995 and 1996.
"I'm very
happy and surprised to be named again," said McIntire, referring
to the 1976 squad that she also led as captain. "It's been
22 years since I was captain, and I didn't expect that kind of honor
to happen again. This is a thrill for me, but basically, it just
tells me that I've been around for a while."
The U.S. team
will be selected by the USGA Women's Committee during the second
week of June. The Ladies Golf Union will also select the team from
Great Britain & Ireland in June
