Peter Alliss of the Palace

Forget St Andrews and Wentworth, Peter Alliss has designed the most exclusive golf course in the world.

TV's voice of golf has produced a blueprint of a nine-hole layout inside the gardens of Buckingham Palace - so that pheasants and grouse won't be the only birdies shot on Royal land. The former Ryder Cup player, who has headed the BBC's golf commentary for the last 30 years, designed the course for the latest issue of Golf International after the magazine switched offices to neighbouring Buckingham Place. And a copy is being sent to the Queen's official residence to see if it can be given Her Majesty's seal of approval.

Editor Robert Green said: "It's well known that the Duke of York is very keen on golf so we asked Peter Alliss if he could come up with anything. "We thought the Palace gardens would only be big enough for short par-threes, but it actually ended up as a full nine-hole course with a par-five in it. We even produced a card of the course as well. "Alliss and his colleague Bruce Weller have executed it really well, but unless the Duke of York goes to the Queen and says 'Mum, this is exactly the type of thing we need in the garden', it probably won't get much further than the design stage."

Work on the computer-aided design teed off in August, once Golf International's move was complete. The holes have all been given names, including 'Jewel in the Crown' and 'P.Alliss Gardens', and there is even a signature hole - the par-five fourth which features two water hazards. In a tongue-in-cheek final touch, Alliss, who won more than 20 tournaments during his playing career, superimposed his picture alongside the Royal family on the Palace's famous balcony.

A Round with Alliss? How about A Round with Palace?
