| Feherty
shares lead with McCarron at Fred Couples Invitational
David Feherty does
television commentary on golf for CBS Sports and spends time with his wife
and five children. He says he's barely played golf this year.
But on Monday, he
fired a 6-under-par 66 to share the first-round lead with Scott McCarron
at the $595,000 Fred Couples Invitational.
With seven birdies
and just one bogey, Feherty had the lead all to himself before McCarron
finished strong with four birdies and an eagle on the last six holes of
the 7,024-yard, par-72 course at The Golf Club at Newcastle.
Fred Funk and Jeff
Sluman were two back at 68. Tournament host Couples shot a 69 to join Nolan
Henke, Hal Sutton and Mike Hulbert at three off the pace.
But it was Feherty,
the amiable 40-year-old from Northern Ireland, who stole the show on the
first day of the two-day event.
"I don't have any
explanation for today," Feherty said. ``If I played 10 rounds of golf this
year I'd be surprised. I think I was abducted by aliens last night and
replaced with a superior human being."
Feherty, who has been
announcing for CBS for three years and also writes a column for Golf Magazine,
has played in three of the four previous Couples tournaments that benefit
local charities.
Feherty won 10 tournaments
in his career before going behind the camera. He was a member of the 1991
European Ryder Cup team.
The winner of the
tournament, which ends Tuesday, earns $160,000.
