Jack Nicklaus and
Tom Watson won the Senior PGA Tour title in the Diners Club matches today,
beating Bruce Fleisher and David Graham 1-up.
Watson birdied three
of the first five holes on the back nine to give the team a three-hole
lead, but Fleisher birdied No. 16 and made a 45-eagle putt on No. 17 to
cut the deficit to one.
"Once we got up they
never got even again," Watson said. "We had opportunities to shut them
out, but we didn't do it."
Fleisher missed a
12-foot birdie attempt on the 18th hole that would have evened the match.
"They had opportunities
about four times to make putts to win holes and so did we," Watson said.
"We just ended up making more putts than they did."
In the PGA Tour division,
Fred Couples and Mark Calcavecchia beat Steve Elkington and Jeff Maggert
1-up.
"We are almost identical
in our games," Couples said. "We were even or ahead the whole way."
Couples made a 20-foot
birdie putt on No. 10, Calcavecchia birdied No. 11 to give the team a two-hole
lead.
"Freddie made a nice
putt on 10 and then I hit it close on the next hole," Calcavecchia said.
"And once we got to 2-up we just held our ground from there."
Julie Inskster and
Dottie won their third straight LPGA Tour title, beating Karrie Webb and
Kelly Robbins 4 and 3.
"The key to our success
is that we are good friends off the golf course," Inkster said. "I can
say anything to her and I don't have to worry about the consequences."
"This is just a really
fun week. It's the only time our husbands caddie for us all year and we
bring our families along."
The winners in each
division split $200,000, while the second-place teams split $100,000.
In the LPGA Tour
third-place match, Annika Sorenstam and Lorie Kane defeated Laura Davies
and Kelli Kuehne 4 and 3.

Sigel finished third in the Senior PGA Tour division, beating Allen Doyle
and Dana Quigley on the 19th hole.
In the PGA Tour consolation
