Nike Tour's Gogel takes Ganter Cup

Matt Gogel shot a 7-under-par 65 today to win the $140,000 Ganter Cup Challenge, an individual and team competition among players from the Nike Tour and PGA Tour.

Fred Couples was second with a 68 and was followed by Craig Stadler, 69, Ryan Howison, 70, John Cook, 71, David Duval, 73, Carl Paulson, 74, and Mathew Goggin, 76.

About 22,000 fans jammed the Willow Creek Country Club course to watch the teams split the match play as the Nike Tour got wins from Gogel, over Stadler, and Howison, over Cook. Couples defeated Goggin and Duval beat Paulson for the PGA Tour wins.

The golfers competed in two foursomes, each playing two matches, while the individual competition went on for the $40,000 top prize. Each match winner also won $15,000.

Gogel won a total of $55,000, $10,000 more than Couples.

Gogel is second on the Nike Tour money list this year with $159,003.

The PGA Tour players were at risk of taking an ego hit for losing to a Nike Tour player.

"It was great to watch how these guys go about their games," Stadler said. "Matt had a really great putting stroke today and he really, really kicked my butt."

Duval liked the concept.

"It's kind of surprising we haven't done this before," Duval said. "It's a great idea -- it's not too long ago I was on the other side. So I know what it's about."
