James says he will not fill dual Ryder Cup role

Mark James said on Wednesday he would not attempt to captain and play for the European Ryder Cup team against the United States in September.

James, Europe's captain, said in a statement he would delay a decision on his role in the biennial event for a month.

"I have the full support of the Ryder Cup committee on this matter," said James. "To avoid further confusion I can confirm that I will not attempt to play and captain the team, as I stated at the beginning of the season."

Earlier, James had told Sky television: "You can't do both. There's too much to do. You have to keep your finger on the pulse of the team and it would just be absolutely impossible..."

The Englishman has shown such good form in recent months that he would be a virtually automatic choice for Europe's team if he chose to play.
