Daly/Davies win after playoff

Laura Davies sank a 35-foot birdie putt on the third playoff hole as she and John Daly came back from a five-shot deficit Sunday to beat Pak Se-ri and Paul Azinger to win the $2 million JCPenney Classic.

Davies made the winning putt on the par-3 17th hole after the two teams parred the par-4 18th and 16th holes, the first two playoff holes.

"That's the longest putt I've holed all year," said Davies, whose putting problems contributed to an LPGA season bereft of a victory. "John helped me with my confidence, telling me I'm rolling it well."

Pak missed on her 18-foot birdie chip from just off the green in an effort to extend the sudden-death playoff.

"It's one of the most enjoyable wins I've ever had," Davies said. "To actually have someone else who is hitting all the shots with you, I was cheering his shots on as much as I was cheering any time I made a putt. It's a lot of fun."

It was also lucrative as the winning pair collected $440,000.

Davies and Daly trailed Pak and Azinger by five strokes entering the final round, but the long-hitting pair combined for a seven-under-par 64 in the alternate-shot format to finish at 24-under-par 260.

Pak and Azinger carded a 69 and received the runner-up check of $230,000.

For the embattled Daly, the win was a bright spot in a year that saw him admit to a relapse to his drinking and gambling, which led to his getting fired by sponsor Callaway Golf.

"I've been working for the last three months very, very hard on my game," Daly said. "I've just got to keep working at it."

Davies hit the critical putts down the stretch to keep the hefty, long hitters in business.

"She made three in the last four holes that were clutch," said Daly. "That was just awesome."
