Paul Lawrie named Golfer of the Month

Paul Lawrie has been named the Asprey & Garrard Golfer of the Month for July after his dramatic Open win at Carnoustie.

The Scot receives a 1,400 euro (£1,000) cheque for the charity of his choice. His triumph in the play-off earned him the award following a vote by a panel made up of members of the Association of Golf Writers and Warren Humphreys, a television commentator on the Golf Channel.

Panel member Renton Laidlaw said: "It was an outstanding month for the European Tour and any one of the contenders might have been named the winner in another month.

"Paul Lawrie produced a wonderful birdie finish at Carnoustie to win the Open and once again he was a narrow winner ahead of Jean Van de Velde."

Lawrie becomes the seventh different winner of the Asprey & Garrard award this year - Ernie Els (January), David Howell (February), Miguel Angel Jimenez (March), Jose Maria Olazabal (April), Colin Montgomerie (May) and David Park (June) were the others.
