Open champion Paul Lawrie has annouced that he is to join the US PGA Tour
"The decision has taken some time but at this stage of my
career I feel that it is something I would like to do"
"I intend to play the bulk of my schedule on the US Tour for
the foreseeable future whilst also maintaining a significant
schedule on the European Tour which will enable me to
retain my European Tour card."
Lawrie added that the decision had been made to"fulfil my potential and improve my world ranking
position".
Lawrie, who jumped from 159th in the World Rankings to 44th following his Open win in July may feel this is his only chance to hit the big time - full time. His 6th place in the Order of Merit is by far his best finish, and his Open money counted on the US Tour also earning him a tour card for 2000 if he wants it.
