Colin Montgomerie was named as
the European Tour's Golfer of the Month for September on Tuesday for his
outstanding play and conduct at the Ryder Cup last month.
A panel of eight European Tour
officials and journalists selected Montgomerie for the award for what was
termed "a heroic performance," despite Europe's one-point defeat by the
United States at Brookline.
The 36-year-old world number three
kept his cool at the Ryder Cup despite what the panel felt was "so much
rudeness and abuse directed at him."
Montgomerie was insulted by spectators,
particularly during his Sunday singles which he won against Payne Stewart.
"He dealt with all the outrageous slings and arrows with tremendous fortitude,
grace and style," the citation said.
