Olazabal named golfer of the month

Jose Maria Olazabal's second Masters victory has, hardly surprisingly, won him the European tour's Asprey and Garrard Golfer of the Month award for April.

Olazabal, winner at Augusta in 1994, completed a fairytale comeback from career-threatening injury by pushing Davis Love and Greg Norman into second and third places in a thrilling first major of the season.

The Spaniard, playing this week in the Benson and Hedges International Open at The Oxfordshire, was the unanimous choice of a panel of Associa tion of Golf Writers' members.

He earns a £1,000 donation from the award sponsors to the Golf Foundation.

Other monthly winners so far this season have been Ernie Els, David Howell and Miguel Angel Jimenez.

Also considered were Jesper Parnevik, who had more success on the US Tour, Frenchman Jeff Remesy and Scot Dean Robertson, who enjoyed their first wins in Europe, Spanish Open champion Jarmo Sandelin and 19-year-old Sergio Garcia, 25th in the Spanish Open on his professional debut.

Not forgotten either was Lee Westwood's Macau Open win, which followed his sixth place in the Masters, but Olazabal was judged head and shoulders above the rest.
