Five avoid Open qualifying

Mark James' second place in the Volvo PGA championship has saved him from having to qualify for the Open at Carnoustie on July 15-18.

Five exempt spots were available from the European Order of Merit after the Wentworth event and James' burst from 25th to third knocked out American Bob May.

The other four places went to South African Retief Goosen, Swindon's David Howell, Swede Jarmo Sandelin and Scot Dean Robertson.

Goosen has also qualified for the US Open on June 17-20.
