Parnevik opts to miss final qualifier

Swede Jesper Parnevik has given up his chase of Ryder Cup points to stay in America.

Parnevik will not be playing in the final qualifying event, the BMW International starting in Munich on Thursday, and so cannot improve his current 12th position in the European table.

It leaves him needing one of captain Mark James' two wild cards to earn a second cap in Boston next month.

"I've been back and forth so many times this summer already that I didn't feel like making one more trip," said Parnevik, who would have had to finish in the top three on Sunday to have a chance of climbing into a top-10 automatic spot.

Parnevik was a wild card two years ago - in fact he played at Valderrama only because Miguel Angel Martin was controversially dropped from the European side.

Second to Colin Montgomerie in the Scandinavian Masters eight days ago and 10th in the United States PGA Championship, he looks a certainty to be chosen by James.

That would probably leave James to decide between Bernhard Langer and Nick Faldo for the other wild card, unless Langer also finishes in the top three this weekend.
