Richardson & Rose struggle

Only 35 of the 168 starters earn tour cards at the end of the six-round marathon next Monday and Steven Richardson, who in 1991 was second in the order of merit, isin joint-137th place after the first round.

"It became a hard game," he said. "You have to play to a certain standard to enjoy it, but I still love the game and deep down I think I can come through this.

"I've seen both ends and it's definitely tougher at the bottom. There's pressure at the top, but it's nice and exciting."

Justin Rose also struggled, he had three sixes on his card and with a 74 and will have to improve dramatically if he is to gain his European Tour card at his second attempt.
