Former English amateur champion Shaun Webster was given a one-shot penalty and
a £500 fine for slow play on Sunday - and it could cost him a place on the European
tour.
Worse still as he tried to speed up, slumped to
a six-over-par 78.
"I didn't like doing it, but I'd spoken to him and felt I had to act," said
rules official Miguel Vidaor after imposing the first shot penalty for slow play
since the school was first held in 1976.
Webster commented: "I think it unsettled all three of us in the group. It
felt like we were running for a while, but then we got held up ourselves for the
last six or seven holes so there didn't seem much point.
"Although I don't have £500 to blow (it cost him £880 just to enter the
school) I don't care about the money. It's the shot - I'm here to try to finish
in the top 35."
Philip Walton, Ryder Cup player just four years ago is in an even worse position, shooting 81. He may need as low as a closing 66 to have any chance of retaining his card.
"The situation is not good. It has to be a low one now," he said.
Justing Rose is in good shape after another solid round and barring disasters should gain his tour card.
"I felt a little bit more tense today and I guess there'll be even more in
the final round. But I feel I can handle it," he said.
"There's no point stressing about it and off the course I've been having a
good time. After starting with a 74 my goal was to move up each day and I've
done that."
