Tom Watson shot
a 4-under-par 68 to beat Hale Irwin and take home the $100,000 first
prize on Tuesday in a made-for-television match at the Jasna Polona golf
course.
About 2,000 people
watched the two play on a sunny, unseasonably warm day.
Watson, a five-time
British Open winner, led throughout the friendly match. His lead was as
large as six strokes at one point.
Irwin, 1998 Senior
PGA Tour Player of the Year, and winner of three U.S. Opens, finished with
a 1-under-par 71. He received $50,000.
The match was played
for a segment of "Shell's Wonderful World of Golf," to be aired Oct. 26
on ESPN.
Down six strokes,
Irwin closed the gap to three on the 17th when he birdied and Watson had
a double-bogey 5. Both parred the 18th.
