Mark O'Meara and
Tiger Woods will represent the United States at the 45th World Cup of Golf
Nov. 18-21 at the Mines Resort in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Woods recently claimed
his second professional major with a one-stroke victory over Sergio Garcia in the PGA Championship at Medinah Country Club. He followed up by winning
the World Golf Championships-NEC Invitational for his fifth PGA Tour victory
this season.
O'Meara has been a
mentor to and frequent practice partner for Woods, his Windermere, Fla.,
neighbor. O'Meara, who has 23 worldwide titles, including 16 on the PGA
Tour, won the Masters and British Open last year. He became the oldest
player to accomplish the feat. He also claimed PGA Tour Player of the Year
honors.
Nick Faldo and David
Carter last year gave England its first World Cup crown with an 8-under-par
568 total at Gulf Harbour Country Club in Auckland, New Zealand. Italy
was second and the U.S. team of John Daly and Scott Verplank came in third.
Thirty-two countries
will compete in the World Cup at the Mines Resort's course, designed by
Robert Trent Jones Jr. Along with the U.S. squad and host Malaysia, 21
other teams qualify automatically.
Those teams will be
named in the coming weeks. Nine other teams will join the field via two
regional qualifiers in Jamaica and Malaysia.
