Geoff Ogilvy favourite for Australian Open

Australia's former U.S. Open champion Geoff Ogilvy says he is at a loss to explain why he cannot win a tournament at home.

Ogilvy won the U.S. Open and the World Matchplay in 2006 but has never won a professional title in Australia. He is hoping his drought is about to end.

Ranked 13th in the world and based in Arizona, Ogilvy finished second to American John Senden in last year's Australian Open and is the favourite to win this year's event, starting on Thursday.

"This time last year I wasn't that excited about my prospects and I feel a lot better now," Ogilvy told a news conference on Monday.

"I did alright last year. On the 17th tee I thought I was one of the guys that could have won it. I didn't do anything wrong on the last two holes but Sendo makes the two best birdies of the year."

Ogilvy admitted part of the problem could be his determination to win the Australian Open but said the extra motivation was a positive force.

"Maybe I try too hard sometimes when I come back here. It's pretty high on the priorities list to win here," he said.

"I truly think about the Australian Open all year.

"I'll be playing big events (in the U.S.) but all year it's in the back of your mind that you're going to come back here and play."
