Frank Nobilo making a comeback

New Zealand golf great Frank Nobilo may be about to launch a comeback, almost five years after his career appeared over due to a serious back injury.

Nobilo's name is among many listed for the PGA Tour's qualifying school in the United States, the first stage of which starts on October 31.

As a previous winner on tour, Nobilo, now 47, would gain exempt entry to the second stage, starting at six venues on November 14.

He could not be contacted today, but Nobilo never uttered the retirement word when drifting out of the game in 2003 due to a debilitating lower back complaint.

Since then he has been employed as a golf commentator in the US.

Nobilo, who reached a career-best No. 21 in the world rankings in 1996, is possibly looking to re-establish himself with a view to playing on the lucrative Seniors Tour in the US when he reaches 50.

Nobilo has won 14 career titles in Australia, Asia, Europe and the US.

Among his victories was the 1997 Greater Greensboro Classic on the PGA Tour. He remains one of just seven New Zealanders to win on the US tour.

His last tournament was the New Zealand Open in January 2003, when he missed the cut after showing obvious distress due to a back ailment caused by a degenerative disc.
