Jim Furyk struggling with back injury

Jim Furyk, whose victory last week at the Canadian Open moved him past Phil Mickelson into the world number two ranking, is doubtful for this week's World Golf Championships event with a back injury.

The US veteran and former US Open champion revealed here on Wednesday on the eve of the World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational that he was having problems.

"I have some sort of injury to my upper back-rib area and it was just tight hitting balls yesterday," Furyk said.

"I made a swing and it really just started tightening up. So I quit hitting balls as quick as I could and tried to get up to the physiotherapy trailers to try to get some treatment.

"On Tuesday evening it was very tight and relatively painful.

"I'm very stiff right now, don't have a lot of movement in my upper back and then into my neck because of the connection. I don't know whether or not I'll be able to play."
