Four top leaderboard after two rounds
Karen Stupples, Becky Brewerton, Eleanor Pilgrim and Cecilia Ekelundh share the lead on three-under-par with one round left to play at the Ladies English Open, in association with Golf Punk.
England's Stupples, playing in her first tournament after pregnancy, added a 70 to her opening 71 at Chart Hills Golf Club. Defending champion Ekelundh of Sweden had a 74, while the Welsh pair of Brewerton and Pilgrim carded 74 and 68 respectively.
England's Laura Davies and France's Gwladys Nocera lead the chase after they both finished the day a shot behind the leaders. A total of 12 players are within two strokes of the lead and in fine shape to swoop the title. Stupples, who had not walked 18 holes of golf since November, was pleased to be one of the front runners.
By the time I got round to the end I was starting to get a little numb, she admitted. It was very windy all day and made putting very difficult and obviously towards the end of the day the greens start getting a little bit bumpy and that made holing the four or five-footers tougher.
I knew I was hitting the ball well. I was a little concerned about how much rust I would have out there but for some reason I've held up pretty well maybe it's because I'm fresh after having so much time off.
The Deal 34-year-old rolled in a long birdie putt at the last to take the joint lead and she added: I'm very happy with that. The 18 th is a tough hole and the putt broke a lot. I was just trying to nestle it in there close and luckily it fell in.
I knew that pars would be good and I done quite well making pars this week. So I just figured try to keep the ball in play, don't shoot yourself in the foot too badly and take opportunities when they come.
Pilgrim shot the best round of the day and she added: I just got some putts in. I'm due so many that I think any time now is perfect. I had a couple on the front so I was minus two on the back nine and then minus two on the front. I was just keeping it in play. I wasn't hitting it awesome but it's not about that on a windy day anyway. It was just a case of controlling the ball.
It was very windy out there and there's not very much of me so I was gripping to the floor trying to stay up straight. I managed to do that. It was hard but you have to adjust your game. I had fun. I've got my sister back on the bag and we were having a good time. I didn't expect to be leading, no way. I thought I might be around top ten but no idea that I was leading.
Like her compatriot, Brewerton, who finished joint third in the tournament two years ago, was aiming for her maiden Tour title.
She said: It was funny: yesterday when we were coming up 18 I said to my caddy Fred, That's the same pin position as where I had to get in the play-off two years ago and I lipped out that day. I said to him we'll make amends. I didn't make the putt on 18 but it's weird how memories come back.
I always feel good on this course because I really like it; even on a day that was tough like today. I kept looking at the board the whole time. You've just got to hang in there because if you just keep making pars you're going to be there or there about s at the end of the day. That's the position you want to be in going into the last round.
Ekelundh added: I felt it was far from being very, very good but it was at least better. I hit the ball well. It was really windy especially on the greens. It was a big struggle. I tried to make birdies on every hole but I'm not feeling too well. My putting kind of disappointed me today.
Davies had taken the outright lead on four-under with six holes to play but came to grief with three bogeys in a row from the par-four 13 th hole, before picking up a shot at last.
She said: It was up and down for everybody. The wind was so horrible out there. I started sneezing, my eyes were itching and it really affected me and I dropped three shots on the trot. So I was glad to come back with one under from there.
One over is a good round today to be honest it's not a bad score at all. It was hard. I'm one shot off the lead so I'm not disappointed.
Nocera was pleased to have recovered her golf clubs after losing them whilst travelling from the US Women's Open and said: I don't have many expectations but I will play my best tomorrow.
