Nick Faldo chooses Jose Maria Olazabal and Paul McGinley as Ryder Cup Assistants

European captain Nick Faldo picked Jose Maria Olazabal and Paul McGinley as his assistants Tuesday for the 2008 Ryder Cup -- provided they don't make the team as players.

Olazabal and McGinley both have said they hope to play when Europe defends the title against the United States at Valhalla in Louisville, Ky.

Faldo said he can change his assistants if needed near the end of qualifying in August.

"They are two guys I have good chemistry with," Faldo said. "One is based mainly in the United States (Olazabal) and one based mainly in Europe, and to have two players of their character and playing stature is very important to me."

Olazabal and McGinley both played on the European team that beat the Americans in Ireland in September.

Olazabal, a 41-year-old Spaniard, has played in seven Ryder Cups. He made the team again last year after a seven-year absence. He and Seve Ballesteros formed a strong partnership, winning 11, halving two and losing two of their 15 matches as partners.

McGinley, an Irishman, played on the last three winning Ryder Cup teams. He made the winning putt at The Belfry in 2002.
