Verplank wins Byron Nelson and climbs to world no. 31
Scott Verplank won the tournament he always wanted to win as he
secured victory at the EDS Byron Nelson Championship by a stroke
over Luke Donald. Verplank, from Dallas had known and been supported
by Byron Nelson, who died last year, since he was 17 years old.
The win takes Verplank to World Number 31, a jump of 37 places.
Donald moves back into the World Top 10.
South African Charl Schwartzel claimed his second European Tour
title when he won the Open de España at the Centro Nacional
de Golf in Madrid. The 22 year old carded a final round 67 for a
16 under par total of 272 to win by a shot from India's Jyoti Randhawa.
Schwartzel breaks into the World Top 50 for the first time as an
improvement of 18 positions in the Official World Golf Ranking takes
him to 40th.
Hirofumi Miyase defeated Toru Taniguchi in a play-off for the Crowns
on the Japan Golf Tour. Miyase climbs 336 positions to World Number
319.
This week's other winners were Gaurav Ghei at the Pine Valley Beijing
Open on the Asian Tour, Nick Flanagan at the Henrico County Open
on the Nationwide Tour and Byron Smith at the Corona Mazatlan Classic
on the Canadian Tour.
