Presidents Cup tickets sell out

Tickets are already sold out for the last two days of next month's Presidents Cup, the fastest sell-out for the weekend action in the event's history, organizers said on Wednesday.

The seventh edition of the biennial competition, which pits a U.S. team against a line-up of International players from countries outside Europe, will be held from September 27-30 at Royal Montreal Golf Club in Canada.

"We couldn't be more pleased with ticket sales," Presidents Cup executive director Tom Clark said in a statement issued by the PGA Tour.

"Ever since it was announced the Presidents Cup was coming to Canada we've felt this event had the potential to be the biggest and best yet, and such an early sell-out of the weekend proves that."

Clark said the selection of Mike Weir, Canada's premier golfer, as one of two captain's picks for the Internationals, had been a significant factor.

"We definitely saw a jump in ticket sales following captain (Gary) Player's selection of Mike Weir," Clark added.

"When you ask fans in the States who their favorite golfer is, they say Tiger Woods. Here in Canada, they say Mike Weir and Tiger Woods."

Left-hander Weir, the 2003 U.S. Masters champion, was selected by Player along with Australian Nick O'Hern to round off his 12-man team.
