No Open entry from Seve Ballesteros

Former champion Seve Ballesteros was the most notable absentee on Monday from a list of 2,425 players who entered for next month's British Open.

Every one of the leading 50 players in the world rankings is set to line up at Carnoustie, organisers the R&A said in a news release.

Ballesteros has not played competitively since struggling on his U.S. seniors tour debut last month.

The 50-year-old 'Spanish Matador', who won the British Open three times and the U.S. Masters twice, shot rounds of 78, 81 and 73 to finish with a 16-over-par tally of 232 at the Regions Charity Classic in Birmingham, Alabama, in mid-May.

Ballesteros has had to battle arthritis and knee problems in recent years and, with his once sublime golf skills fading, has found it hard to string together four decent rounds. He has not made the cut at the British Open since 1995.

The total Carnoustie entry of 2,425 includes 102 exempt players. More than 1,600 will take part in regional qualifying at Royal Dublin on July 3 and at various courses on July 4.

Local final qualifying takes place on July 9-10 at Downfield, Monifieth, Montrose and Panmure, with 96 players at each course.

Only the top three at each venue will gain places at Carnoustie from July 19-22.
