Stuart Appleby questions Michelle Wie

Stuart Appleby is the latest to question why Michelle Wie is taking part in PGA Tournaments.

Wie is preparing to feature in this week's Sony Open, which will be her 13th men's tournament alongside some of the world's top players including last week's winner Vijay Singh, world number two Jim Furyk, Luke Donald and Davis Love are among those trying to take the title off David Toms.

However, the 17-year-old has made just one cut in the men's events and that came in a weak field in South Korea. Her last tournament scores have been 75, 77, 78, 79, 77, 81, 81 and 80.

Appleby said "She is not ready.

"I think she came five years too early to try to play the men's tour. I think she should really just let it go for now.

"She's not ready for it. She's certainly not proving anything except that she can't play with the men at her level right now. It's getting to the stage where she'll get criticised too much and she needs to pull the plug and come back when she's 20, 25."

Michelle Wie fired back however to the suggestion that playing against the men was a marketing plan.

"I guess being the only girl on the baseball team when I was 4-years-old was also a marketing plan -- not," she said. "It's what I want to do. Some people take it as, 'It's a marketing plan to make more money, blah, blah. But they don't realize it's what I want to do and I enjoy it. You can't trade happiness for anything."
