Lee Westwood targets European Money List
Former European No. 1 Lee Westwood is ready to put the disappointment of last week’s Ryder Cup defeat by the United States behind him in his bid to win this year’s money-list in Europe.
The Englishman did not have the best of times at Valhalla, with just two halved matches to his credit in Europe’s 16-1/2 to 11-1/2 loss, but now has an individual goal to concentrate on.
A successful defence of his British Masters title at the Belfry this week starting on Thursday would take Westwood, who is fourth on the order of merit, to within $140,000 of absent money-list leader Padraig Harrington of Ireland.
Money-list rivals Swede Robert Karlsson, in second place, and Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez, who is third, have also given the tournament a miss.
“It helps that I’m the defending champion this week,” Westwood told reporters on Wednesday. “It helps that I like the golf course. It helps that I’m playing an hour from where I live. There’s going to be lots of home support.
“I’ve got the goal of trying to win the order of merit in my sights and a lot of people trying to do the same are not here this year, apart from Graeme McDowell.
“So there are a lot things this week to get up for.”
Westwood’s Cup team mate McDowell, who had two wins and a half in Kentucky, can rise to second place on the order of merit with the right set of results this week.
Northern Irishman McDowell, twice a winner this year and fifth on the money-list, feels his performance in Valhalla last week can only help his career prospects.
“The way I handled things, hopefully it will be a positive for the future,” McDowell said. “I really got to ask a lot of questions of myself and I felt like I answered them last week.”
