Daniel Chopra from Sweden defeated Steve Stricker in a play-off to win the opening tournament of 2008, the Mercedes-Benz Championship on the PGA Tour at the Plantation Course at Kapalua, Hawaii.
Chopra adds this win to a recent run of form which includes winning the penultimate PGA Tour event of 2007, the Ginn sur Mer Classic at Tesoro, and a play-off loss to Aaron Baddeley at the Mastercard Masters in Australia in November.
Chopra went into the event ranked 120th in the world, but beat American star Steve Stricker at the fourth hole of a play-off to claim the first prize of $1.1, a Mercedes sports car, a return ticket next year to this winners only event and a place in April's Masters championship at Augusta.
Despite losing, Stricker nevertheless improves one place in the World Rankings, elbowing out Jim Furyk as he moves into a career highest third place behind Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.
The tournament was restricted to last year's US Tour winners, but Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Padraig Harrington and Adam Scott all stayed away.
